Test of English as a forgein language or we can say TOEFL. Is the English ability test (American language) which needed to applay to the college or university in the united states or other country in the world. This test very needed for the applicant or celebrated by ETS office ( Educational testing service) in united states and all the test participant from around the world. Kind of this English TOEFL test generally needed to college qualification for almost all university in united states and Canada for the program undergrauated (S1) or graduated (S2 – S3). This TOEFL score are use for for consider English ability from the new college student who apply to the university in other country, including university in europe and Australia. Generally TOEFL test more orientation to the American English and a little bit different wih the IELTS test . which is more orientation to the English british not like IELTS.
This TOEFL test generally doesn’t have part of individual interview test. Generally this test spen around three hour and executed into 4 part , there are :
- Listening comprehension
- Grammar, structure and written expression
- Reading comprehension and last
- Writing
TOEFL test score around 310 ( minimum score ) until 667 ( maximal score) for the PBT ( paper based test ) version. Since 1998 , this TOEFL test has been executed online by using computer (computer based testing (CBT) and since 2005 has been called IBT (internet based test). In the place which can not do CBT or IBT (because there are no computer facilities and the internet service) .
This TOEFL test still can be excuted manually by using paper and pollot( paper based text or PBT). The other kind TOEFL test is TSEF ( test of spoken English program) which look like with the individual interview part in the IELTS test. This test usually used if we want to apply as a lecture assistant or laboratorium assistant ( as one way to collage fee dispensation) in us university ( or other country) the test execute by oral test and spend at least more than 20 minutes and the limit of the registration same with the other TOEFL test and cost around U$ 100.in this globalitation era, even the country which the language isn’t English , like japanesse,korea,india,Malaysia,Indonesia.etc. have the certain TOEFL score qualification for the new college student , local or domestic , especially who come from forgein country , in Indonesia TOEFL used for :
- Qualification for the new employee in the government instution, goverment and privet company.
- Qualification for the new college student for graduate program S2 and S3.
- Qualification to scholarship even from government or private.

1. TOEFL paper based test
Include 4 section : listening,structure and reading.
Maximum score : 677
2. TOEFL computer based test
Include 4 section : listening, structure, reading ,writing.
Maximum score : 300
3. TOEFL internet based test
Include 4 section : listening,reading,writing ,speaking.
Maximum score : 120.
Officially since TOEFL internet based test Published around the world. The kind of before test doesn’t exist anymore but in fact until now TOEFL paper based test still use in the university institusion even for the new employee recruitment in Indonesia or the other country which not using the English language.
